Gazen Salts - Sandwich


A great way to enjoy and support Gazen Salts is by joining our volunteer days. Get hands on, learn new skills, meet new people and enjoy the countryside and fresh air with these outdoor opportunities.

How can you take part?

• Join in as an individual with our volunteer task days
• Arrange a work experience placement, (under 16’s should do this through their schools).
• Small groups can be accommodated from businesses, social groups etc.

• You can either arrange to come on a task day or meet up with the warden for a brief induction, learn what to expect from your days and the work we do.

Volunteers Days are now taking place every other Wednesday and Saturday from 9 - 12 noon.

What Types of Work to Expect?

Autumn and Winter  

• Tree work – light pruning, coppicing and pollarding.
• Fencing and repairs to various structures such as seating.
• Scrub clearance
• Footpath maintenance such as applying woodchips.
• Wildflower planting
• Pond and waterway clearance

Spring and Summer

• Clearing vegetation from footpaths.
• Wildflower planting
• Weeding
• Minor repairs

A Typical Task Day

• We meet at the reserve.
• There is a short introduction to the work site.
• The task will be thoroughly explained and support will be on hand throughout the day. No experience is necessary.
• Any Health and Safety guidance will be given at the beginning of the task and throughout the day.
• Its then time to enjoy the task and the company.

All those taking part should exercise due care to their own safety and that of other workers and visitors to the reserve.

We Supply

• A qualified first aider
• Insurance
• All safety equipment and working gloves.
• All tools necessary.
• Training on a task by task basis.

What to Bring with You

• Strong footwear and old clothes.
• Plenty to eat and drink (no drinking water is available on site).
• To prepare for all weathers we recommend you bring waterproofs, warm clothing in winter, sun hats and sun screen in summer. Insect repellent is a must.
• If you have any medical conditions please make the warden aware of these. Feel free to chat to the warden about this in confidence if you have any concerns.

Who can take part?

• For Health and Safety reasons under 16’s must be accompanied by a responsible adult, or arrange their placements through their schools, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Scouts or Guides etc. Please contact us beforehand.
• Ages of our volunteers currently range from students to senior citizens.
